I am an Associate Professor at the departments of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine and (by courtesy) the Computer Science department at Iowa State University. My interests are protein function prediction, microbial genomics, metagenomics, structural biology, Jazz (bebop), Blues (especially electric blues), Indie, Romance music (Elgar is great), Rock, movies (too eclectic to go into here, zombies rank high), cooking (Middle Eastern), dancing with my kids, comics, tweaking my Gentoo machine, Python, Open Source software,…

    I just read your brief assessment of the photonic communication of cells. I do agree with your comments but it isn’t clear how many negative tests are needed. Perhaps the communication is by electric or magnetic field? I think the important thing is that there is some communication mechanism although we haven’t detected it.

    On another front, I am also interested in mining the genome although I do not work in that area. One avenue you may want to look at is “Algorithmic Attributed Graph Grammars” for the computational work of classifying and assessing function. I used it in my dissertation for the automated generation of performance models of distributed computer applications. I think it would apply to your problem, although it may require some special computational efforts. If you want, I can forward you some info about it.
